Driver arrested at 75 miles per hour in a 40 MPH Zone on Royal Avenue.

An 18 year-old driver was arrested today for "Reckless Driving" along Royal Avenue at 75 miles per hour in a 40 mile per hour zone. Recently, the City Council directed the city traffic engineering department to study the speed limit along Royal Avenue between Sycamore drive and Sequoia Avenue. That study resulted in a reduction of the speed from 45 MPH to 40 MPH.

For some time, the SVPD Traffic Bureau has been enforcing speed violations in the area in order to be responsive to the residents who live in that stretch of the roadway. Their complaint is always about the high speeds of the drivers.

Senior Traffic Bureau Officer Vernon Trujillo observed a 2009 Infinity G-30 driving at a high rate of speed in the area of Royal Avenue and Hartley at 9:43 a.m.. This area has many houses and driveways with cars parked along the street. The driver was captured on police "LIDAR" travelling at 75 miles per hour. In addition to his poor driving, he had no license plates on the car, and had no proof of insurance. The 18 year-old male had no excuse for his reckless behavior.

Approximately 15 citations have been issued in the area during the past week by Traffic Bureau Officers, all for excessive speed.

The Simi Valley Police Traffic Bureau would like to remind everyone to obey the speed limits and slow down. A vehicle travelling at 75 MPH on a city street is extremely reckless and could result in a fatality collision. Together, the police and the community can make Simi Valley a safer place to live, work and play and slowing down can help meet that goal.
