A 38 year old parolee, Cherie Winder, was seriously injured after a pursuit & crash in a stolen vehicle

DATE/TIME: Tuesday, July 16, 2018 / 5:05 p.m.

INCIDENT: Felony Evading / Possession of Stolen Vehicle

LOCATION: 27300 Block of Baseline Street, Highland

SUSPECT: Cherie Lynn Winder, 38 years old, Los Angeles County resident

SUMMARY:

On Tuesday, July 16, 2018, patrol deputies from the Highland Police Department were conducting an area check for a stolen 2004, BMW 325 coupe, reported stolen to the Los Angeles Police Department on July 12, 2018. Deputies located the stolen vehicle with one suspect (driver) in it.

Deputies initiated a traffic stop to contact the suspect. The driver accelerated away from the deputies and a vehicle pursuit ensued. The suspect drove in a reckless manner to avoid being captured by deputies and failed to stop at posted signs, red traffic signals, maneuvered her vehicle into opposing traffic lanes and drove at speeds between 50 – 80 mph on city streets. The pursuit came to an end when the suspect collided with another vehicle at the intersection of E Highland Avenue near the entrance to Patton State Hospital. The suspect was ejected from the vehicle and thrown 20 – 30 feet, landing on the asphalt pavement. The suspect sustained severe head injuries, contusions and abrasions to her body. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment and remains in serious condition. The other motorist was shaken up but did not report any injuries at the scene.

The suspect was identified by her fingerprints as Cherie Lynn Winder. Winder is on active parole through the Department of Corrections for Sales of a Controlled Substance. She will face new charges of Felony Evading from an Officer, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle and Parole Violation. The criminal report will be sent to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution. The San Bernardino Police Department is investigating the traffic collision.
