Scams/Other

Computer Virus Scam

On Saturday, 07-07-18 at 10:57 a.m., a 64-year old Daly City resident reported that she received a call from a 1-800 number, and the caller who had an “Indian” accent advised her she had a virus on her computer due to recent travels. The victim said the caller sent her to a “go to meeting” link and the person on the phone claiming to be an Apple tech support shared her computer screen with her and showed her that she had a virus. The caller said the only way to get rid of the virus was to obtain gift cards. Convinced she had a virus, the victim said she went to Lucky’s and purchased four $100.00 Visa gift cards. The caller stayed on the phone with her while she purchased the gift cards. The victim the read the caller the confirmation numbers from the back of the cards. After returning home and ending the conversation with the caller on the phone, the victim called Apple tech support who advised her she was likely the victim of a scam. The Apple tech support person removed the “go to meeting” link from her computer to prevent further access to her computer.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. Please note: the City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
