News Release: Department Welcomes Back Traffic Team

After a three year hiatus, the Department’s Traffic Team is making a comeback. After listening to the concerns from residents at several community meetings, Police Chief Robert Jonsen determined traffic enforcement was a top priority.

The team which consists of a motorcycle and patrol unit began their permanent specialized assignments this week. They are a team dedicated to traffic enforcement, separate from patrol and will operate during commute hours or as needed. The team will focus on apprehending speeders and other traffic violators, patrolling school zones, and ensuring that oversized commercial vehicles use permitted routes.

There have been numerous roadway modifications around the city involving new speed bumps, roundabouts, and signage. The traffic team will be patrolling those areas as well.
“We heard the public loud and clear. Their number one complaint when it comes to public safety in Palo Alto is the traffic. We want to be accountable and show our residents we are doing as much as we can to make the roads safer,” said Chief Jonsen.
