Monday July 9th, 2018 :: 01:26 p.m. EDT

On July 8th, 2018 at approximately 4:24 p.m. the Lower Township Police Department responded to the Cox Hall Creek Wildlife Management Area (formerly known as Ponderlodge Golf Course) in the Villas section of the Township, to investigate a possible drowning in a lake located on that property.
Investigation revealed that the complainant was one of three friends who were at the Wildlife Management Area (WMA).  Two of three friends were allegedly swimming in the Cox Hall Creek WMA lake and the third returned to their residence in the Villas.  One of the two swimmers came out of the water and was unable to locate his friend, the second swimmer.  The missing friend was identified as a 58 year old white male.
A multi-agency response was activated with assistance from the Town Bank Fire Department’s Dive Team, Villas Fire Department, Lower Township Rescue Squad, Cape May County Sherriff’s Department K9 unit, as well as other Cape May County resources.  After a brief search, the decedent was later located in the water, near the shoreline.  Due to obvious signs of death no life saving measures were attempted.
At this time the cause of death has not been determined.  The investigation is ongoing and is currently being investigated by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, the Cape May County Medical Examiner’s Office, along with the Lower Township Police Department.   The death does not appear to be suspicious and there is no apparent danger to the public.
Investigators are currently attempting to locate a next of kin to make proper death notification in accordance with policies and procedures.  An autopsy was performed by the South Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
