Plastic Bag Law

On July 6, 2017, the Teaneck Township Council adopted Ordinance 18-2017 which requires all retail establishments within the Township of Teaneck to collect a pass-through charge of $0.05 (five cents) from customers requesting disposable plastic checkout bags.

The purpose of this ordinance was to reduce the use of plastic disposable checkout bags, advance solid waste reduction, protect waterways, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ultimately better protect the environment.

Although Ordinance 18-2017 was to become effective July 6, 2018, the Township is suspending implementation and enforcement until Governor Murphy takes action on Bills A3267 and S2600, introduced by the Legislature. The bills would impose a statewide fee on the use of plastic bags. If signed by Governor Murphy, the new law would take effect on October 1, 2018 and will supersede Township Ordinance 18-2017.

At this point, merchants should not enforce Ordinance 18-2017, pending further notification from the Township
