Advisory

DUARTE TO ENFORCE ILLEGAL FIREWORKS RESTRICTIONS INCLUDING FINES UP TO $1,000

The City of Duarte will be enforcing restrictions on fireworks usage for the Fourth of July, 2018 holiday. Fireworks may only be discharged on the day of July 4th between the hours of noon and 11:00 p.m.  They are not allowed to be discharged on the days leading up to the holiday.

The only type of fireworks allowed in Duarte are the “Safe & Sane” type and those that have been purchased in California. These types of fireworks are legally sold in Duarte at four different locations starting June 30th. Remember, discharging fireworks north of Royal Oaks Drive is prohibited at any time, except for Royal Oaks Park.

Both Duarte Public Safety and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will have extra patrols out on the holiday and days leading up to it to ensure that restrictions are enforced.  Violators of the City's fireworks restrictions maybe be prosecuted and receive up to a $1000 fine and/or six months in jail. The California State Fire Marshall has decreed a zero tolerance against illegal fireworks due to drought conditions.

The loud booms and bursts of fireworks on the 4thcan also scare dogs, cats and critters, causing them to run away. In fact, the 4th of July is one the busiest days of the year for animal shelters around the country. Here are some tips to help keep your pets safe.

  • Keep pets indoors with windows and doors closed. Fireworks can cause animals to change their behavior and do things like jump over fences and/or bite a human.
  • Play music to help cover the noise of Fireworks.
  • Never light fireworks next to your pet.
  • Don’t take your dog to the fireworks display.
  • If you are home, do an activity that your dog enjoys and will take their mind off the noise outside.
  • Give dogs a bully stick or chew toy to help occupy their time.
  • Tire your dog out by exercising them before the festivities begin.
  • Use pet-friendly calming spray or oils.
  • If your dog already uses a Thundershirt, put this on them.
  • Make sure your pet has an updated ID tag worn on a secure collar.
  • Get your pet microchippedbefore the 4thof July holiday.
  • If your pet runs away, check neighborhood, contact Duarte Public Safety at 626 357-7938 during normal business hours and Los County Animal Control at 626 962-3577.

For additional information regarding fireworks, contact Duarte Public Safety at (626) 357-7938 or, if you see someone discharging fireworks, contact LASD Temple Station 626 285-7171.
