Successful Water Rescue
On 6-30-2018 at 2:57 pm The Janesville Police Department and Janesville Fire Department were dispatched to the Monterey Dam for a water rescue. Officers from the patrol division were the first to arrive on scene. The officers saw a male subject hung up near the dam.
Responding officers shut down traffic on Center Avenue so they could work toward recovering the victim. Officers responded to potential recovery areas down river to offer assistance and further attempt a rescue. Officers made several attempts to reach him in and bring him to safety. Two of our officers went into the water to get a tow line to the victim, with no success as the current was to strong.
Members from The Janesville Fire Department deployed a boat south of the victim. The Janesville Police Department Deployed a Drone to offer additional assistance as well.
Approximately 20 minutes after we were notified of the incident the victim was recovered from the Rock River by The Janesville Fire Department. He was wearing a personal floatation device at the time of incident, which contributed to his safety.
The victim, a 27 year old male was kayaking the rock river in route to a destination in Northern Illinois when his kayak tipped over just north of the Monterey Dam. He became lodged in the area and the current swept him just south of the rail road overpass, where he was eventually rescued. He was treated and released from an area medical facility.
