Gilbert Hanners Jr. and Morgan Ammons arrested and charged in connection with recent Burton property crimes.
Last week, Sheriff’s Office deputies and investigators responded to several reports of burglaries and vehicle break-ins that occurred on Mroz Road, Laurel Bay Road and Rugrack Road in Burton. Deputies and investigators met with the victims and processed the scenes for forensic evidence. In the investigations that ensued, Sheriff’s Office investigators received information on the identities of two possible male subjects. On Thursday, June 21st, investigators made contact with the two subjects—19-year-old Gilbert Hanners Jr. of Burton and 17-year-old Morgan Ammons of Bluffton—and interviewed them regarding their possible involvement in the recent crimes.
Gilbert Hanners Jr. and Morgan Ammons were interviewed specifically about a burglary that occurred at the Reach Out and Touch Ministries on Mroz Road, a housebreaking on Rugrack Road and two vehicle break-ins—one on Mroz Road and the other on Laurel Bay Road—that occurred between June 20 and June 21st. During the interviews, investigators obtained details and developed probable cause to charge Hanners Jr. with two of the crimes and Ammons with all four. Following their interviews, Hanners Jr. was charged with Burglary 2nd Degree, Housebreaking with Intent to Steal and Simple Possession of Marijuana (marijuana was found on his person) and Ammons was charged with Burglary 2nd Degree, Housebreaking with Intent to Steal, and two counts of Breaking into a Motor Vehicle. They were both transported to the Beaufort County Detention and incarcerated.
At the Detention Center, Gilbert Hanners Jr. and Morgan Ammons received bond hearings from a Beaufort County magistrate. Hanners Jr.’s bonds totaled $15,615 and the bonds on Ammons totaled $25,000 and, as of this afternoon, both remain incarcerated. Hanners Jr. and Ammons are persons of interest in other property crimes in the Burton area that are under investigation. Anyone with information on other criminal activities that Hanners Jr. and Ammons may be involved in is encouraged to contact Investigator Brian Abell at 843-255-3436 or Crimestoppers 1-888-CrimeSC if wishing to remain anonymous and for possible reward.
