Two men were arrested yesterday in connection with a San Leandro stabbing incident that left one man dead and another fighting for his life.

The suspects, 23 yr-old Michael Mendozaroche of Alameda and 23 yr-old Alex Fernandez of Oakland were both arrested at their homes by San Leandro Police detectives. 

Through the investigation, detectives identified the two suspects from interviews and video surveillance. Evidence, including the possible weapon, was also located near the location of the crime that appeared to have been discarded by the suspects.

The investigation into the case continues as detectives attempt to understand the motive and reason for the attack. The incident occurred late Tuesday night in the parking lot of the downtown San Leandro Washington Plaza, an outdoor shopping center that has shops, restaurants, and a grocery store.

"So far we know that four men left a nearby restaurant/bar after closing and got into some sort of argument in the parking lot," said San Leandro Police Lieutenant Isaac Benabou. The argument led to a physical altercation where the two victims were stabbed multiple times. "This is an involved case that will require many more hours of work; we want to conduct a complete and thorough investigation for the victims, and to ensure that both suspects are held accountable for their crimes."

The case against the two men will go before the Alameda County District Attorney on Friday.
