Sheriff Statement regarding the Consolidated Correctional Treatment Facility Construction and Renovation Projects
 
"The vote to support the continued development of a new correctional treatment facility is absolutely the just and right move forward. It is a vote for service, compassion and the opportunity for the most vulnerable in our care to receive the appropriate medical and mental health services in a treatment centered environment.
 
As of June 16, 2018, the jail population consists of 23% self-identified homeless individuals. Additionally, 70% of our inmate population report a medical or mental illness and approximately 65% are on some kind of prescribed various medications.
 
I do not believe a jail should be a mental health hospital but that is increasingly what our jail system has become.
 
I thank the Board of Supervisors for working with us, along with the Department of Health Services (DHS), Department of Mental Health (DMH), Department of Public Works and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry as we move forward with solutions that must include a new treatment facility, but also a robust diversion into community based services to meet the growing need to balance justice for the victims of crime and the appropriate treatment for our inmate patient population."
