Scam Alert-"Spoofing"

Community Message:  Beware of Phone Scams.

The Culver City Police Department wants the community to beware of phone scams and number spoofing.  "Spoofing" occurs when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to your caller ID display to disguise their identity. Spoofing is often used as part of an attempt to trick someone into giving away valuable personal information so it can be used in fraudulent activity. There have been reports from other agencies where the callers “Spoofed” the number, making the victim believe that the call was from a Police Department.  The caller identified himself as an employee of the department and informed the potential victim of outstanding fines.  In order to clear up the fines and avoid arrest, the potential victim was then instructed to make a payment over the phone.

The Culver City Police Department will not make such phone calls and demand payment over the phone.  If you receive a suspicious call from someone identifying themselves as a member of the Police Department or any other Police Department, ask for a call back number and report the incident by calling 310 837-1221.
