On Saturday June 2^nd 2018, at 6:22 P.M, deputies were providing security inside Peter J. Pitchess Detention-South Facility, Inmate Dining Room (IDR) in Castaic, California.  Over 150 inmates were eating dinner at the time, when deputies noticed an inmate appeared to be choking on something. 

After being alerted by inmates, deputies looked towards the commotion and swiftly responded towards the choking inmate.  One of the deputies, Deputy Carlos Escamilla noticed the inmate was having breathing problems, and was turning purple a definite sign his airway was impeded and in extreme distress.  The deputy immediately began to perform the Heimlich maneuver, and after six to seven forcible thrusts the inmate dislodged the piece of food and began breathing on his own. 

The deputies escorted the inmate out of the IDR and took him to professional medical staff to be assessed for precautionary reasons. 

The heroic deputy mentioned that the inmate later thanked him for his quick lifesaving actions.  Deputy Carlos Escamilla and his partners were able to quickly assess the situation and use their training to save the 36 year old inmate’s life.

The inmate is not suffering any residual effects from the choking incident and continues to be housed at the Pitchess Detention-South Facility.
