Advisory

Update on Sea Pines incident. One subject arrested, Woodbine Drive house cleared. No second subject found.

Sea Pines Security and Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a report of a subject attempting to break into vehicles on Woodbine Drive in Sea Pines Plantation. Witnesses reported that after the male subject attempted to break into the vehicles, he got into his own vehicle and drove away from the area. The vehicle was spotted by Sea Pines Security and Sheriff's Office deputies and a traffic stop was conducted. The subject, who was the driver and only occupant of the vehicle, was detained and identified by witnesses as the person attempting to break into the vehicles on Woodbine Drive. The subject, identified as 25-year-old Alfonza Powell, was then arrested for Tampering with a Motor Vehicle.

There was believed to be another subject at large, as a witness observed a male subject run inside of a residence on Woodbine Drive. The residence was quickly surrounded by security officers and Sheriff's Office deputies. Sheriff's Office K-9 units were summoned to the scene and arrived a short time later. K-9 units cleared the residence, finding no subject inside. Whether there was a second subject involved in the attempted vehicle break-ins is still under investigation, as is the possibility that Alfonza Powell will face additional charges. Residents and guests in the area of Woodbine Drive in Sea Pines should see a de-escalation in Sheriff's Office presence shortly. Thank you for your patience throughout this incident.

Note- Alfonza Powell's charge was upgraded from one count of Tampering with a Motor Vehicle to one count of Breaking into a Motor Vehicle, after the investigation revealed the elements of that crime were met.

We appreciate your partnership and continued commitment to the safety of our community.
