Michael Pope arrested after firing shots and ramming police vehicles

At 12:54 AM on May 28, 2018, Police Dispatch began receiving calls of shots being heard in Mountain View.  Officers arrived on the 1000-block of San Fernando and made contact with witnesses. Initial indications are that there was some type of disturbance outside amongst a group of males wherein 34-year-old Michael R. A. Pope fired off several shots before leaving the scene in a red Dodge Ram pickup.  An officer saw the Dodge driving through the Costco parking lot on Debarr.  The officer attempted a traffic stop in the parking lot of the Northway Mall but discontinued the pursuit when Pope failed to yield and began to drive recklessly. Officers re-engaged when Pope began ramming several police cars that had arrived in the area.  Pope also struck an unoccupied civilian vehicle that was parked in the lot.
Pope jumped out of his vehicle and ran from the scene.  Several officers gave chase; Pope refused to obey any of their commands and he continued to run.  Pope was tased during the foot chase but the Taser did not appear to have any effect on Pope and he continued to flee.
On the 3200-block of Penland Parkway Pope physically ran into the side of a patrol car; he put his hands in front of him at that time.  Officers took Pope to the ground as he actively resisted being put into handcuffs.  It became necessary to place Pope in both handcuffs and leg irons as he refused to quit fighting.
Three patrol vehicles were damaged; no officers were injured. The unoccupied civilian vehicle was a Subaru Forester and it sustained damage on its left side. Inside the Dodge officers saw at least two holsters and a rifle in plain view.  Pope is a convicted felon and is not allowed to be in possession of firearms.  He was also an absconder from probation/parole.
Pope was issued citations for No Insurance and Driving on a Revoked License.  He was remanded at the Anchorage Jail on charges of Assault III, Fail to Stop, Reckless Driving, Resist by Force, Misconduct Involving a Weapon I, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Misconduct Involving a Weapon III, Operating Under the Influence, and Criminal Mischief IV.  He also had an outstanding felony warrant for Operating Under the Influence.   Prior to being jailed Pope was evaluated at a hospital and medically cleared.
