On May 22, 2018, at 6:28 PM, officers were dispatched to the Petaluma Wetlands Preservation Park parking lot for a report of subject unconscious in a parked running vehicle. Officers responded and contacted the driver of the vehicle, later identified as Joel Barrera.

Barrera displayed signs of being under the influence of alcohol and admitted to driving the vehicle. Barrera was administered field sobriety tests during which he displayed signs of impairment. Barrera was placed under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol and was later determined to have a blood alcohol content of 0.15 or almost twice the legal limit. A records check of Barrera returned showing that he a suspended license for a prior DUI and was on probation out of Marin County for that violation.

During a search of the vehicle an unsecured semi-automatic Glock handgun was located in a backpack along with a loaded magazine.

Barrera was arrested for violations of 23152(b) VC, driving under the influence of alcohol, 1203.2 PC, violation of probation, 14601.2 VC, driving with a suspended license, and 25400(a)(1) PC, carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle. Barrera was transported to Sonoma County Jail and booked into custody for the above violations.

The Petaluma Police Department would like to remind the community to drink responsibly and as a reminder all firearms must be unloaded and secured in locked container when being transported.
