On May 21, 2018 at approx. 1:42 am, a Simi Valley Police Officer pulled over a young driver for a speeding violation. Upon contacting this young driver (18 yrs. old) the conversation turned to the dangers of driving so fast and what perils lie ahead for young drivers who drive at such speeds. The young man seemed to understand, was very respectful to the officer and thanked the officer for the advice. The young driver was then sent on his way.
Approximately 30 minutes later, the radio crackled in this same Police Officers patrol car. A citizen had contacted SVPD to report a vehicle had collided into a power pole, causing the pole to be knocked down. Paramedics were also responding. The officer responded "Code 3" lights and siren. Upon arrival, the Police Officer recognized the vehicle as the same one he had just stopped 30 minutes prior. Amazingly, the driver was standing next to the vehicle. The same young driver he had just spoken to and he was uninjured. It turned out that the young driver was driving way to fast, lost control and collided into the power pole. His car was totaled.
The risk of motor vehicle crashes is higher among 16-19 yr. olds than among any other age group. In fact, per mile driven, teen drivers ages 16-19 are nearly three times more likely than drivers aged 20 and older to be in a fatal crash. Parents are reminded to sit down with young drivers in their household and discuss the do's and don'ts of driving. Their expectations should be clear with an emphasis on obeying the rules of the road. Driving is a privilege, not a right. The next young driver may not be as fortunate as the one described above.
