Maker Faire Bay Area is Back! May 18 to May 20, 2018
San Mateo County Event Center Hosts Maker Faire - May 18 to May 20, 2018
Maker Faire Bay Area is coming to the San Mateo County Event Center this weekend, Friday, May 18th through Sunday, May 20th. The annual event is part science fair and part county fair, and suitable for all ages. It draws tech enthusiasts, DIYers, crafters, educators, engineers, students, and commercial exhibitors. This large-scale event is expected to draw over 200,000 visitors during the three-day period.
The San Mateo Police Department will have plenty of personnel in attendance to provide a safe, community-oriented venue and we will be coordinating with Maker Faire staff to ensure public safety. Maker Faire is well-staffed and provides professional security at the event. The San Mateo Police Department, in cooperation with Maker Faire staff, will provide event information through social media including traffic and daily activities.
For event and traffic updates regarding shuttles and available parking lots, you can follow the event on Twitter: @MakerFaire and @FaireTraffic. Your police department will also be retweeting some of the major updates and information as needed, @SanMateoPD. Additionally, SMPD will be posting major traffic impacts and public safety alerts to Nixle if the need arises. To sign up for event-related Nixle Alerts text keyword MAKERFAIRE to 888777.
The City of San Mateo and Police Department, the San Mateo County Event Center, and the Maker Faire production staff have worked collaboratively for months to minimize traffic impacts. However, there will be an unusually large number of vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles in our city this weekend to enjoy what has become an exciting tradition at the San Mateo Event Center. With that in mind, we offer a few reminders regarding this yearly event:
• Be prepared for traffic delays, particularly on surface streets near the intersection of SR92 and US101, on freeway ramps, as well as around the Event Center
• Be cautious, patient and aware of bicyclists
• There will be a large increase in pedestrian foot-traffic in San Mateo as well – please drive safe and watch for pedestrians
• Attendees are encouraged to consider alternate modes of transportation, such as walking, biking, Caltrain, SamTrans
