Advisory

Firearms/ammunition/explosives amnesty day scheduled for tomorrow, May 17, 2018, at three Beaufort County locations.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office has scheduled a firearms, ammunition and explosives amnesty day for tomorrow—May 17, 2018 between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.—at three Beaufort County locations. The purpose of the amnesty day is to provide Beaufort County residents with an opportunity to drop off firearms, ammunition and explosives without fear of criminal penalty and, of course, to keep these items out of the wrong hands and off our streets. On the amnesty day, the following items will be accepted by Sheriff's Office bomb technicians and United States Marine Corps exposive ordinance disposal personnel:

  • Firearms (guns)
  • Ammunition
  • Fireworks
  • Flares
  • Explosives
  • Military Ordnance
  • Hazardous Items- blasting caps, fuse igniters, primers, black powder, etc.

Beaufort County residents are asked to bring the above listed items and drop them off at any of the three following locations on the amnesty day:
  • The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Range, 120 Shanklin Road in Burton
  • The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office substation, 70 Shelter Cove Lane on Hilton Head Island
  • Barrel Landing Road in Okatie- off of U.S. 278 at Beaufort County's property located behind Parker's gas station
Tomorrow, if you are unable to travel or have questions on whether it is safe to transport certain items, such as old military ordinance or other potentially unstable items, please call Sheriff's Office Emergency Dispatch at 843-524-2777 to have a bomb technician call you. The bomb technician will either come to you to pick up the items or provide you with guidance on how to safely transport them to one of our three amnesty day locations.

Important- No chemicals or prescription drugs will be accepted during the amnesty day event.

We appreciate your partnership and continued commitment to the safety of our community.
