Full Notification

On 5/15/18, at approximately 1126 hours, NPD received four calls reporting gunshots heard in a wide area of the San Marin neighborhood.  Arriving officers heard what they believed to be the sound of gunshots in the distance, but were unable to isolate a probable location. 
 
A resident later contacted NPD upon learning of this incident from our social media releases.  He advised that a neighbor, in the same area as where the sounds were initially heard, had been performing maintenance on an old vehicle resulting in repetitive and loud backfiring.  Officers contacted the neighbor and confirmed, at the time the call was initially reported, he had been working on adjusting his carburetor.  As a result, his vehicle backfired on numerous occasions.
 
The timing, location, and explanation from the neighbor mirrored the information reported and sounds heard by responding officers.  We are confident the source of the reported gunshots has been identified and no further investigation is warranted.  NPD would like to thank those who provided tips and the community at large for their patience as we worked diligently to thoroughly investigate this incident.
