Investigation of Threats Report

On Tuesday, May 8th, the Novato Police Department investigated the report of a series of threatening messages sent to a Novato resident by a former roommate, Adam Frey. Frey is an 18 year old Novato resident and student of Novato High School. (Normally, student names would remain confidential but in this case because Frey is 18 years of age and as a result of media inquiries, his name is being released). With the information obtained from the victim, Novato Police Officers contacted Frey at Novato High School where they interviewed him about the threatening content reported by the victim. After the interview and after a consent search of Frey’s vehicle, NPD Officers placed Frey under arrest for a violation of 422 PC – Criminal Threats and for 30310(a) PC – Possession of ammunition upon school grounds. The search of Frey’s vehicle produced several rounds of ammunition that are commonly associated with a World War II, Russian made rifle and are of the collector type of ammunition. Frey, because he is an adult, was booked into Marin County Jail. Frey has since been released on bail.

The threatening information obtained during the course of this investigation did not reference nor involve the use of a firearm. No firearms were found to be in Frey’s possession or readily accessible to him. There were never any threats to Novato High School or its students.  The only nexus to the Novato High campus in this case is that Frey happened to be contacted by police while at school.

The Novato Police Department continues to review the case and has connected with our partners at the Novato Unified School District, Frey’s parents and conferred with mental health professionals within Marin County to ensure the safety to the public. There are no known threats to the public or Novato High School. We take these types of cases seriously and conduct a thorough threat assessment that also involves NUSD Administration. Regrettably, in this case, as is often the case, false rumors about a connection to the NHS campus created unnecessary fear in the Novato High School community.
