Military exercise to take place on Daufuskie Island between 11:30 p.m. tonight and 3:00 a.m. tomorrow morning.
According to officials with the Daufuskie Island Fire Department, the United States Department of Defense (USDOD) will be conducting a military exercise late tonight on Daufuskie Island. During the exercise—between 11.30 p.m. and 3:00 a.m.—residents and guests of Daufuskie Island, Southern Beaufort County and possibly even parts of Northern Beaufort County may hear simulated machine gun fire and explosions. In addition, residents and guests of Daufuskie Island could see military personnel—wearing camouflage fatigues and carrying weapons—on foot in areas between the Beaufort County boat dock and Melrose. Please do not be alarmed by these sounds during the times of the military exercise, especially if you reside or are visiting on or near Daufuskie Island.
If you suspect sounds of gunfire and explosions are not related to the military exercise, we urge you to contact Sheriff's Office Emergency Dispatch 9-1-1 and report it immediately. We appreciate your patience during the USDOD exercise.
And as always, we appreciate your partnership and continued commitment to the safety of our community.
