Update of all current construction projects in the Northern Kentucky district

COVINGTON, Ky. (May 11, 2018) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 6 would like the public to be aware of the following conditions and/or operations that are being reported for highways in District Six. Changes and/or additions from last report are underlined/red. Motorists should be aware of possible delays or lane closures on the following projects:

KENTON – BOONE COUNTIES

• I-71/I-75 SB (186.9 – 182.9 mile-marker) – A pavement repair project on southbound I-71/I-75 from just before the KY 371 (Buttermilk Pike) Exit 186 to KY 1017 (Turfway Road) Exit 182 is ready to begin. On Friday, May 11, starting at 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Saturday, I-71/I-75 SB will be reduced to 1-lane to shift traffic to the left, inside shoulder and lane. Once the traffic shift is in place, restrictions on the number of lanes will only be overnight or over the weekend. Weekday work will take place between 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. Weekend work will take place between 10 p.m. on Friday until 7 a.m. Monday. There will be no restrictions during weekday daylight hours. The speed limit will be reduced to 55 MPH in the work zone. Double fines will be issued in the work zone. Motorists should watch for lane closures, lane switches, crews and equipment. A section on the I-71/I-75 NB from Turfway Road to the I-275 interchange WILL NOT start until later this summer. Be work zone alert.

CAMPBELL COUNTY, KENTUCKY – CLERMONT COUNTY, OHIO

• I-275 (Combs-Hehl Bridge) 73 – 71 mile-marker – ODOT has a pavement resurfacing and bridge work project planned for I-275 that includes bridge deck overlays and rehabs of four I-275 twin bridges at Four-Mile, Sutton Road, Kellogg Ave. and the Combs-Hehl. Preliminary work is scheduled to begin Monday, May 14 and will include various shoulder closures on I-275 between Four Mile Road and Kellogg Ave daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to construct temporary lighting and pavement. Stay tune for more updates and details! Motorists should be alert when entering the work zone.


BOONE – KENTON - CAMPBELL COUNTIES

• I-75, I-275, I-471 – A guardrail crew will be repairing guardrail and cable damages nightly Monday, May 14th and Tuesday, May 15th from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. Watch for lane closures, crew and equipment.


BOONE COUNTY

• KY 237 (Gunpowder Creek Road) 0.4 mile-marker - A slide repair project is in progress on KY 237 (Gun Powder Road) which will require a lane closure. A temporary traffic signal will be in place to help with traffic control. The anticipated completion is May 16.

• KY 338 (26.6 – 28.8 mile-marker) – A pedestrian safety project on KY 338 in Burlington from Temperate Street to the Boone County Fairgrounds will begin May 14, 2018. Motorists should exercise caution and watch for traffic control devices, flaggers, construction personnel and equipment entering and leaving the work zone. Estimated completion of the project is July 15, 2018.

• KY 338 (East Bend Road) -14.3 mile-marker - KY 338 (East Bend Road) is closed to through traffic for a slide repair project at the 14.3 mile-marker. This is in the area starting up the hill from Lower River Road. This section of roadway will be closed during working hours from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. During non-working hours, the road will be restricted to one lane and traffic will be controlled using temporary traffic signals. The slide repair work will take approximately 3 weeks to complete. The suggested detour will be to use KY 2852 (Riddles Run Road) to KY 536. KY 536 meets with KY 338 again at “4 corners”.

• US 42 (8.4 – 8.6 mile-marker) – A highway safety improvement project on the US 42 area that includes the intersection connections at Rice Pike and Hicks Pike in Boone County is in progress. Hicks Pike is closed between Stallion Way and Harmony Hill Drive. Local traffic will have access. Hicks Road leading to Stallion Road will remain open. A signed detour will be in place. Improvements at Rice Pike will require a 90-day closure that will start May 1. A signed detour will be in place using KY 536 (Hathaway Road) to KY 1925 (Big Bone) to US 42. Anticipated completion is October 1.

• KY 536 (Mt Zion Road) – Work continues on the KY 536 corridor in Boone County extending from Old Union Road to I-75. Lane closures on US 42 will continue intermittently during non-peak hours between Mt. Zion Road and Frogtown Road. The entrance to Highland Drive from Mt. Zion Road is closed. Follow signed detour on Tiburon Drive. Motorists should exercise caution when travelling the work zone. Slow traffic and possible delays should be expected. The posted speed limit is 35 MPH.


BRACKEN COUNTY

• KY 2228 (Foster Road) – KY 2228 is closed to through truck traffic with barricades across the inbound lane at KY 9 and at KY 8 due to repeated truck impacts to the bridge over Holts Creek and guardrail at the KY 2228 and KY 8 intersection. A truck detour is posted to take KY 9 (AA Highway) to KY 19 to KY 8. Local traffic will have access. Closure will remain in place until further study is done.

• KY 1159 (Bladeston-Brooksville Road) – A highway safety improvement project starting north of Bracken County High School to KY 1011 is in progress. The project will improve the alignment of three areas: Fronks Lane, the area between Lake Lane and Badger Road and then approximately 0.50 mile north of Badger Road. Motorists should watch for lane closures with flaggers on each end of the work zone to control traffic during working hours and trucks moving on and off the highway. Expect minor delays. Work is weather pending. This project has a July 1st, 2019 completion date.

• KY 22 (Falmouth-Neave Road) 0 – 4.3 mile-marker – A highway safety improvement project is in progress. The project will improve shoulders of KY 22 starting at the Pendleton County line to KY 10 at Willow. Crews will be working Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Motorists should watch for crews, equipment, flaggers and expect short delays.



CAMPBELL COUNTY

• US 27 (Alexandria Pike) 16.7 -19.4 mile marker – A 2.62 mile asphalt resurfacing project will begin soon. Motorist should watch for lane closures with flaggers on each end of the work zone to control traffic during working hours. Expect minor delays. Work is weather pending. This project should be complete by May 31.

• KY 10 (Flagg Springs Pike) 4.5 mile-marker – A bridge replacement project is in progress. The bridge will be closed to through traffic during the construction. Motorists are encourage to use the signed detour taking KY 1997 (Stonehouse Road) to KY 9 (AA Highway) to KY 1996 (Carthage Road). This project will be complete by Aug. 1.

• KY 10 (Flagg Springs Pike) 4.4 – 13.6 mile-marker – A highway safety improvement project is scheduled to begin soon that will improve shoulders from KY 1997 to the Pendleton County line. The work will include multiple pipe extensions, shoulder widening, tree trimming and asphalt surface. Motorist should watch for lane closures with flaggers on each end of the work zone to control traffic during working hours. Expect minor delays. Work is weather pending. This project will be complete summer 2018.

• Johns Hill Road (KY 2345) Connector to Three Mile Road (KY 2238) – Construction is almost complete on a new connector road between Johns Hill Road (KY 2345) and Three Mile Road (KY 2238). This new connector road will be adjacent to the NKU campus. The roundabout on Three Mile Road will be fully functional except for the new roadway to NKU that is still under construction.

• KY 9 Expansion - Newport – South Section - Construction is complete on the section between Lowell Street between 9th Street and KY 9 (12th Street). This section is open, but drivers should still be alert in the work zone as crews finish project.

• KY 9 Expansion - Newport – North Section – Traffic has moved to the new alignment between 5th Street and the Taylor Southgate Bridge. Watch for crews as work continues along right of way.


CARROLL COUNTY


• US 42 (9.9 – 13.2 mile-marker) – A widening project on US 42 from Four Mile road to the Ghent city limits is in progress. Motorists should exercise caution and watch for traffic control devices, flaggers, construction personnel and equipment entering and leaving the work zone. Estimated completion of the project is May 2018.


GRANT COUNTY

• KY 22 (Taft Highway) 5.6 mile-marker – A slide repair project continues on KY 22 on the Owenton side near 4 corners, the intersection of KY 22 and KY 36. Work will be from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. weekdays. Flaggers or signals will be in place. Motorists should use an alternate route during the closure. Weather permitting, estimated completion May 18.

• KY 36 (14.4 - 13.7 mile-marker) – A road improvement project is in progress on KY 36 and the I-75 Exits 154 to Williamstown – Owenton. Besides the exit ramp work, KY 36 will be improved from the I-75 overpass to Lynwood. KY 2943 (Skyway Drive) will also be reconstructed and relocated. The contractor is in the process of clearing right of way, weather permitting. The main construction will start in the spring. Motorists should be mindful of lane closures and traffic control in the work zone. The project has a Nov. 1 completion.


HARRISON COUNTY

• US 62 (11.6 – 12.1 mile-marker) – A highway safety improvement project is in progress on US 62. The project area is between Indian Creek and Blackbird Lane. Motorists should be mindful of lane closures, crews and equipment in the work zone. Project has a Nov. 1 completion.

• CR 1062 (Robinson Union Road) – 3.9 mile marker - A bridge replacement project has begun on Robinson Union Road over Curry Creek. The existing road and bridge will remain open to traffic during construction with an estimated completion date of late spring 2018.


KENTON COUNTY

• I-275 WB Exit 83 Ramp – A bridge maintenance project is schedule for the I-275 WB Exit 83 ramp to US 25 southbound and northbound (Dixie Highway). This ramp will be closed starting Friday, May 18 at 2 a.m. until mid-afternoon on Sunday, May 20. The entrance ramp from KY 1303 (Turkeyfoot Road) to I-275 WB will remain open. Motorist should watch for workers and equipment in the work zone.


OWEN COUNTY

• KY 22 (Gratz Road) – A resurfacing project on KY 22 from Squiresville Road extending easterly to Owenton is still in progress. Motorists should exercise caution and watch for traffic control devices, flaggers, construction personnel and equipment entering and leaving the work zone. Expect minor delays. Work is weather pending.

• KY 1670 (Lake Road) – A resurfacing project on KY 1670 from the boat ramp extending northerly to KY 22 is still in progress. Motorists should exercise caution and watch for traffic control devices, flaggers, construction personnel and equipment entering and leaving the work zone. Expect minor delays. Work is weather pending.

• KY 1883 Caney Creek Bridge (1.9 mm) - A bridge deck restoration and waterproofing project on KY 1883 (Caney Creek Bridge) located at the 1.9 mile-marker is in progress. The bridge is closed to traffic. Motorists can use KY 845 as a detour.


• KY 3096 (Fortner Ridge Road) 3.7 mile-marker – A bridge deck restoration and waterproofing project on the Eagle Creek Bridge located at the 3.7 mile-marker on KY 3096 (Fortner Ridge Road) is in progress. The bridge is closed to traffic during the project. A signed detour will be in place. Motorists can take KY 330 to KY 845.

• KY 607 (New Columbus Road) 10.5 mile-marker – A bridge deck restoration and waterproofing project on the Caney Creek Bridge located at the 10.5 mile-marker is in progress. The bridge is closed to traffic during the project. A signed detour will be in place. Motorists can take KY 227 to KY 3103 to KY 1883.



The KYTC offers the following tips for motorists when they approach a work zone:

1. Expect the unexpected.
2. Slow down.
3. Don’t tailgate. Keep a safe distance between you and the car ahead of you.
4. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the construction workers and equipment.
5. Pay attention to the signs.
6. Obey road crew flaggers.
7. Stay alert and minimize distractions.
8. Keep up with the traffic flow.
9. Navigate traffic with GoKY or via Waze on your smartphone!

Remember construction and maintenance activities are scheduled on a tentative basis and are subject to change depending on weather conditions, emergencies, and other factors beyond the control of the Department of Highways. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet appreciates your patience during the construction process.

Motorists are urged to use caution in work areas, and to be alert for flaggers, workers, and equipment which may block a portion of the roadway, and other items of concern in work zones. Motorists are asked to pay careful attention to warning signs alerting them of the roadwork and obey work zone speed limits where applicable.
