#LASD This AM a Deputy from South LA Station was assaulted by a suspect in an SUV after a routine patrol check

This morning at approximately 5:35am a Deputy from Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, South Los Angeles Station was assaulted by a suspect when the Deputy approached the vehicle during a routine patrol check of a local business area.

While conducting a routine check of the local businesses in the area of S. Vermont Avenue and Artesia Boulevard, in the City of Lawndale.  The Deputy saw a white SUV Kia parked towards the rear of a restaurant parking lot.  All the local businesses in the shopping strip were closed including the Wienerschnitzel Restaurant.  The Deputy approached the vehicle to check for occupants and determine why it was parked in a closed busniess parking lot.

When the Deputy approached the vehicle, the driver rolled down the driver side window.  The Deputy saw a lot of smoke and immediately recognized the odor of Marijuana coming from inside the SUV.  The Deputy began to conduct a DUI investigation and asked the driver to open the door.  The driver appeared to be complying until the Deputy asked him to remove his seatbelt and exit the SUV.

At this time the driver said, “Fuck-You” to the Deputy and put the SUV in reverse. The Deputy was still standing between the SUV driver door when the suspect began to back up.  The driver door caught on the Deputy’s gun belt and spun him sideways.  The suspect continued to back up and the driver side mirror hit the Deputy’s left side and then the front bumper hit his left leg.  The suspect continued to drive in reverse and exited the parking lot at a high rate of speed.  The Deputy saw the suspect drive northbound on Firmona Avenue and initiated a pursuit.  The suspect turned eastbound on 172nd Street towards Hawthorne Boulevard. Before the suspect approached Hawthorne Boulevard, he jumped out of the moving vehicle.

The SUV was still in gear and rolled across the center island of Hawthorne Blvd and onto Redondo Beach Boulevard.  The SUV came to a complete stop when it collided with two parked vehicles that were unoccupied at the 4200 block of Redondo Beach Boulevard.

The suspect ran towards a neighborhood located north of Artesia Boulevard, between Firmona Avenue and Grevillea Avenue.  The Deputy cancelled his foot pursuit however maintained continuous observation of the suspect.  Deputies from South Los Angeles Station set up a containment of the area.  Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Aero Unit and K9 Units responded to the location shortly after.

After a couple hours of their search, LASD resources cancelled the search for the suspect. The handling Deputy believes the suspect was positively identified based on the vehicle owner information and the suspect was no longer an immediate threat to the public.

The Deputy sustained minor injuries and was later transported to a local hospital.  There is no further information at this time and the investigation is on-going.
