Covington Police Warn Citizens of Increase in Telephone Scams

The Covington Police Department is warning the public of a recent uptick in telephone scams about unpaid utility bills. The scam involves a caller posing as a representative of a utility company, threatening to shut off services if the victim does not immediately give them payment information over the telephone.

The Covington Police Department is reminding residents and local businesses never to give account or credit card information to someone over the telephone. Legitimate utility companies will already know your account numbers, and should never call you demanding payment over the telephone.

Rather than give your information to someone posing as a utility provider, make payments through an established method that you have used in the past. If you receive this type of call, contact your provider directly, through a published telephone number or website.
