Man Arrested after Striking Woman with Vehicle and Leaving Scene

Suffolk County Police today arrested a man after he struck a woman who was on the road attempting to help a dog that was struck in Brentwood last night.

Third Precinct officers responded to a 911 call of a hit and run in Brentwood on April 30 at 10:46 p.m. A 36-year-old woman was driving a Ford sedan southbound on Fifth Avenue near Inchcape Road when she stopped to help an injured dog in the roadway. Another southbound vehicle, described as a gray sedan, struck the woman after she exited her car. The gray sedan fled the scene without stopping. The woman was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore with non-life-threatening injuries. The dog died at the scene.

After an investigation, Third Precinct Crime Section officers determined Oscar Canales-Cruz was the driver of the 2007 Honda Civic that struck the woman. He was arrested today at approximately 4:50 p.m. Canales-Cruz, 36, of Bay Shore, was charged with Leaving the Scene of an Incident with Injuries and Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle. His arraignment has not yet been scheduled.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
