City of Hoboken Seeks Summer Employees for Green Jobs Program

The City of Hoboken is looking for high school students ages 14-17 for its Summer Green Jobs Program. The Program seeks to recruit young Hoboken residents who are committed to improving our parks, streets, and public places.

“I’m looking forward to welcoming dozens of young employees eager to help improve their city,” said Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla. “This is an opportunity for teens passionate about both social change and their community to channel that energy into tangible, positive work.”

Employees in the Summer Green Jobs Program will first go through 10 hours of training in green infrastructure installation and maintenance, after which they will become part-time City employees providing seasonal assistance to the Department of Environmental Services.

“We launched this program last year, and it was a great success,” said Human Services Director Leo Pellegrini. “This year, I’m excited to build on what we’re offering our young residents. In addition to hands-on experience with green jobs, we’ll also offer mentorship sessions with city hall officials who can introduce the participants to a range of potential careers.”

Through this program, trainees will learn valuable skills that may lead to future employment opportunities in the increasingly relevant field of green infrastructure, which is the use of trees and plants to absorb rainfall, reduce flooding, and improve water quality and public health. Additional training workshops may be provided throughout the Program in life skills, such as resume writing, community emergency preparedness, and financial literacy. Trainees will be responsible for shade tree maintenance, park cleanup, and green infrastructure installation and maintenance.
