Community Alert: 14 Car Break-Ins Overnight in the City of San Mateo

The San Mateo Police Department is actively investigating a series of auto burglaries that occurred throughout the City overnight and is stepping up enforcement operations. SMPD has increased uniformed patrols in the affected areas as we investigate the identities of the suspects. We are asking for our community’s help to stay vigilant and report suspicious behavior.

This morning, April 23, 2018, SMPD dispatch received multiple calls from residents who found their vehicles burglarized. A total of 14 vehicles had their windows smashed and items such as electronics, money and bags were stolen. The auto burglaries occurred in the areas of Ottwa St and Trollman Av on the east side of San Mateo, as well as the areas of Flores St, Ivy St and 4th Av on the west side of San Mateo. SMPD officers will increase targeted patrols in the affected areas as our officers actively investigate the crimes.

We urge our community to continue to protect themselves by not leaving their valuables in their vehicles, even if the vehicle is parked in your driveway. If your vehicle is burglarized – even if nothing is taken – we recommend you call SMPD immediately. This will help us identify crime trends and allow us to take a proactive approach in the targeted areas.

Help us solve these crimes by partnering with your police department and report suspicious behavior. Please call 9-1-1 if it is an in-progress event or 650-522-7700 if the information is delayed. Anyone with information regarding these crimes is encouraged to contact SMPD. Tips can be left anonymously at: http://tinyurl.com/SMPDTips or by calling the SMPD Secret Witness Line at (650) 522-7676.

Also, if you have surveillance equipment or a camera that captures the exterior of your business and/or home, please register it on our City of San Mateo website using the San Mateo NEST-Neighborhood Eyes Security Team at www.tinyurl.com/SMPDNest.
