Community Alert: Unconfirmed Mountain Lion Sighting

This morning, at about 8:02 a.m., SMPD received a call from a third party of a mountain lion sighting in the area of Fernwood St and 36th Av. The witness did NOT report that the animal was predatory or aggressive. In an abundance of caution, Abbott Middle School and Hillsdale High School were advised to temporarily shelter in place (instruction will continue with the doors closed) as our officer’s conducted a thorough check of the campuses with school faculty. After a completed search of the school campuses the animal was not located. Although this is an unconfirmed sighting, we want to keep our community and parents informed.

Below you can find links to our San Mateo County School Emergency Guidelines, which includes the term definitions our schools and SMPD use to identify emergencies and the appropriate response (such as shelter in place).  Also, included is a link to information on mountain lions and safety tips.
