Homicide Detectives Announce Reward Offers in Shooting Death of Lancaster Convenience Store Cashier

Homicide Bureau detectives announced two money rewards at a 10:00 A.M. press conference held Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at the Hall of Justice.  The two rewards came from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the city of Lancaster.  With these enticements, detectives are hopeful someone with information about the crime will come forward and help solve the murder of beloved community member, John Ruh, 61, of Lancaster.

John was a regular fixture in the neighborhood convenience store where he cashiered, located in the 44400 block of Division Street, Lancaster.  He worked in the community where he lived and was familiar to virtually everyone in that area.  The United States Marine veteran was widely-known for his smile, sunny disposition and friendliness on the job.

At 8:30 A.M. on Monday, February 19, 2018, two male suspects entered the store to rob it and fatally shot John in the upper torso with a handgun.  They walked into the store, but it is unknown if they fled on foot or in a vehicle.

During the press conference, Homicide Bureau Lieutenant Joe Mendoza announced a $20,000 reward sponsored by Supervisor Kathryn Barger, Los Angeles County, 5th Supervisorial District, and approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, and a $10,000 reward sponsored by the Lancaster City Council.  Both rewards were offered in exchange for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of the suspects responsible for the shooting death of the victim.

The two suspects are described as Black males of unknown age, who wore sweatshirts with the hoods cinched-down to conceal their faces.

The victim’s girlfriend of 22 years, Michelle Brace, described John as “funny and energetic.”  She recalled a short conversation they had the last morning they shared before the victim got up early to go to work.  He didn’t have to work, but it made him feel good to provide for his family.

“What time is it?” she said.
“Time for me to get up,” he replied.

John Ruh is survived by his son, who followed in his father’s military footsteps and is serving in the United States Army.  John and Michelle happily shared a blended family, with the victim raising all the children as his own.  Together, they shared six kids and six grandchildren.

If you have information about the suspects or this crime, please call Homicide Bureau Detective Steve Blagg or Detective Scott Lawler at 323-890-5500.  If you prefer to provide information anonymously, you may call "Crime Stoppers" by dialing (800) 222-TIPS (8477), use your smartphone by downloading the “P3 Tips” Mobile APP on Google play or the Apple App Store or by using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org
