This week has been Dispatcher Appreciation Week. We want to recognize all of the hard work that our dispatchers do on a daily basis.
Dispatchers work in an environment where they handle a mundane call one second and a shooting call the next or they may very likely handle them both at the same time. Dispatchers have to be intuitive, able to remain calm and still get important information that they relay to officers. It is the epitome of “organized chaos.” A dispatcher often times has to handle critical incidents such as a barricaded subject, domestic violence call, child abuse situation and still be able to change gears when someone calls to simply ask for directions. A call of a broken arm or heart attack doesn’t wait for the dispatcher to complete the previous call. They bring calm to people in crisis and they keep officers and the community safe. They handle thousands of calls without complaint and do it because they choose to serve others.
