2 juveniles arrested for attempted murder, driving a stolen vehicle and leading deputies on a pursuit

DATE/TIME: April 11, 2018 / 3:30 pm

INCIDENT: Stolen Vehicle / Pursuit / Attempted Murder (Shooting)

LOCATION: 13000 Block of Main Street, Hesperia

SUSPECT(S): #1, 16 years old, resident of Lucerne Valley
#2, 17 years old, resident of Hesperia

VICTIM: 14-year-old male, resident of Hesperia

SUMMARY:
On April 11, 2018 at about 3:30 pm, deputies from the Hesperia Station observed a reported stolen vehicle, a 1996 Teal Green Suzuki Sidekick, in the 13000 block of Main Street. The vehicle was a reported stolen vehicle from the Big Bear Lake area and occupied by two male subjects. The deputy attempted a vehicle stop and the driver failed to yield, resulting in a pursuit. The pursuit continued east on Main Street and through several residential areas south of Main Street. As the suspect attempted to make a turn onto 4th Avenue from Muscatel St., he lost control and collided into a chain link fence of a residence. At that time, the passenger fled from the vehicle on foot and the driver again fled the area in the vehicle. Pursuing deputies quickly took the passenger into custody after a short foot pursuit, as other units continued to pursue the vehicle. Due to the reckless disregard for safety displayed by the suspect driver, deputies initiated a PIT maneuver to terminate the pursuit. The PIT maneuver was successful, however as the suspect driver tried to flee again, he collided into a second chain link fence where the vehicle finally came to a stop. The male driver was then taken into custody without incident.

During the stolen vehicle and pursuit investigation, Sheriff's dispatch received a 911 call from a resident reporting his 14-year-old son was shot at while walking home from school in the area of Kern Ave. and Wells Fargo St. The suspect vehicle description in that call matched the vehicle from the pursuit and through further investigation, the suspects were connected to both incidents. The firearm used in the shooting was recovered from the stolen vehicle and no injuries were reported during the shooting. Investigators determined the suspects confronted the victim while he was walking home and attempted to sell him beer. When the victim refused, the suspects pointed a rifle at him and fired one round, missing the victim as he ran away. The suspects then drove toward Main St., where deputies initiated the vehicle pursuit.

Both juveniles were booked at the High Desert Juvenile Hall for Attempted Murder, Felony Evading, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle and the Hit and Run Traffic Collision.
