On 4/9/2018, at 8:20pm Rutherford County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to 1037 Chase High Road to do a welfare check after receiving information from the Travelers Rest Police Department about a possible shooting.

Based upon the exigent circumstances, Rutherford County Deputies were able to make entry into the residence and located a male, Michael Dale Splawn, who was deceased.

Travelers Rest P.D. reported that they had a man (Jason Daniel Butler, 45) and woman (Shannon Toney Butler, 43) in custody after Jason held a gun to his own head due to crimes he says he committed in North Carolina. Travelers Rest police officers had responded to a disturbance around 7:30 p.m. Monday at the drive-thru of Chick-fil-A on Benton Road. When officers arrived, they said Jason was emotionally distressed over a shooting he said he committed in North Carolina and held a gun to his own head. Jason surrendered without a struggle and both he and Shannon were taken into custody.

A murder warrant has been secured against Jason Daniel Butler for the murder of Michael Splawn.

Jason and Shannon are currently being held at the Greenville County Detention Center on charges from the incident at Chick-Fil-A.

Jason will soon be extradited back to Rutherford County to face the murder charge.
