*3rd Update* Suspect Arrested in Montebello Transit Bus Stabbing, 5700 Blk of Whittier Blvd. in East Los Angeles

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is crediting the media and public for their quick response in helping Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide detectives make an arrest in the case involving a man who was brutally attacked while riding a bus.  Detectives are continuing their investigation into the stabbing of the victim who was aboard a Montebello Public Transportation bus line on Monday, April 9, 2018.  In the early morning hours of Thursday, April 12, 2018, Homicide detectives arrested a suspect in connection with the case.  “It was a savage attack and one that caused us great concern,” stated Sheriff Jim McDonnell.  “It was seemingly unprovoked, as the suspect walked towards the front of the bus, pulled a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times,” he added.     
 
On Thursday, April 12, 2018 at approximately 1:00 a.m., Homicide detectives arrested 27-year-old Manuel Ortiz for his alleged involvement in the crime, after being contacted by members of the public.  Manuel Ortiz is a Los Angeles County area transient.  He was detained while being treated at a medical facility for unspecified reasons. 
 
Investigators are continuing to search for any additional witnesses or evidence related to this crime.
 
The victim’s medical status has not changed, and he remains in critical condition.
 
The motive continues to remain unknown and it does not appear to be gang-related. 
 
There is no additional information available, as the investigation is ongoing.
 
The suspect’s booking photo will not be released at this time. 
 
The suspect was arrested and booked at East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station for attempted murder.  He is being held without bail.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the stabbing of a man riding in a Montebello Public Transportation bus, Route 10.  The stabbing occurred at 10:13 A.M. on Monday, April 9, 2018, while the bus travelled in the 5700 block of Whittier Boulevard, East Los Angeles. 
 
Detectives are seeking the public’s help to identify the suspect depicted in the video.  He is described as a male Hispanic, in his mid-30s to early-40s, standing 6’ tall, weighing 170 to 180 pounds, and wore a blue and orange shirt, and green shorts at the time of the crime.  Any additional witnesses or patrons who patronized Route 10 of the Montebello Public Transportation system during the time of the incident are asked to come forward with any information they may have about the suspect or the crime.    
 
The victim was transported to a local hospital and is listed in critical condition.
 
There is no further information available as this time.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau detectives are continuing to investigate the stabbing of a man, which occurred on Monday, April 9, 2018 at approximately 10:13 a.m. in the 5700 block of Whittier Boulevard in East Los Angeles.
  
Homicide detectives have learned that the suspect and the victim were patrons in a public transit service bus that was travelling westbound on Whittier Boulevard. Upon arriving at the 5700 block of Whittier Boulevard, the suspect, a male Hispanic in his mid-30’s to early 40’s, stabbed the victim, a male Hispanic in his mid-20’s, multiple times with a knife in the upper torso.  After assaulting the victim, the suspect exited the bus and ran away from the location. 

The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he is listed in grave condition and is not expected to survive.
 
The motive for the crime is unknown.

There is no additional information available at this time, as the investigation is on-going.
