Advisory

Beware of "spoofing" and recent scams involving law enforcement officer impersonators.

Overnight—Tuesday into Wednesday—numerous Beaufort County residents reported on social media that they had been called by their own mobile telephone number—spoofing—and were asked to provide personal information, such as a social security number. In addition, there have been recent reports of email and telephone scams involving subjects, who impersonate members of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office or other law enforcement agencies and insist their prospective victim make immediate payment of a fine—missing jury duty or IRS tax delinquency—to avoid being arrested.

These are all scams, no member of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office will ever ask you for payment of a fine over the telephone in lieu of being arrested. The Sheriff's Office recommends our residents and guests ignore these email and telephone scams and under no circumstance should personal or financial information be provided.
