Berkeley Carjacking Ends in Arrest in Oakland by CHP & OPD

At 6:12am, Berkeley Police Dispatch received a call regarding what was initially reported as an auto burglary.  When officers responded to the 1600 block of Walnut Street they made contact with the victim who shared that she was getting into her car when a dark sedan (occupied by two people) pulled up and a lone male subject got out.  The victim was sitting in the driver seat of her car when the suspect pulled her out, assaulted her, and then drove away northbound on Walnut Street in her black, Lexus RX 350. Dispatch immediately entered the car into the Stolen Vehicle System.

At 9:35am, Dispatch was contacted by a helicopter from the California Highway Patrol who spotted the stolen Lexus at Golden Gate Fields.  A CHP patrol vehicle attempted a traffic stop of the Lexus and was involved in collision with a second vehicle that was with the stolen Lexus.

CHP’s Air Unit continued following the vehicle as it raced through Berkeley and into Oakland.  We then notified the Oakland Police Department to advise them that the carjacking vehicle had entered their city.

The Lexus was abandoned by the driver on the 1300 block of Mandela Parkway in front of an apartment complex.  The suspect then got into another vehicle parked nearby and again attempted to flee.  The CHP Air Unit followed and began vectoring in Oakland Police.  The suspect crashed the second vehicle and attempted to flee on foot in the area of 10th and Pine Streets when she was taken into custody without incident.  Oakland Officers also recovered property stolen from the victim during this morning’s carjacking.

This investigation remains ongoing as there are still suspects at large and there are no other details immediately available.  As always we are grateful for the support of our partners in the California Highway Patrol and the Oakland Police Department.
