Approximately 45 minutes ago, the Sheriff's Office conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that was being driven recklessly at the intersection of U.S. 278 and Indigo Run Plantation. When deputies approached the stopped vehicle, its occupants advised that there was a gunshot victim in the back seat. Deputies secured the scene and summoned paramedics from the Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue.

Paramedics responded and confirmed that the victim was deceased. The victim appears to be an adult male and is believed to have died as a result of gunshot wounds. Sheriff's Office deputies are attempting to locate where the actual shooting took place. The victim's identity has yet to be established, as the Beaufort County Coroner's Office is still enroute to the scene.

One eastbound lane on U.S. 278 in the area of Indigo Run has been temporarily shut down for personnel from the Sheriff's and Coroner's offices to conduct their investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact Sheriff's Office Emergency Dispatch 9-1-1 or Crimestoppers 1-888-CrimeSC if wishing to remain anonymous and for possible reward.
