Homicide Detectives investigating an in-custody death at the Morongo Basin Jail.

INCIDENT: In Custody Death Investigation
LOCATION: Morongo Basin Jail
VICTIM: Joshua Andrew Pitts, 28 years old, resident of Twentynine Palms
SUMMARY:
On Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at 10:22 p.m. a deputy assigned to the Morongo Basin jail was completing his hourly safety logs when he found inmate Joshua Pitts hanging in his cell. The deputy immediately moved Pitts to the floor and began CPR until medical aid arrived. Paramedics arrived and pronounced Pitts deceased at the scene.
Investigators from the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division responded to conduct the investigation.
Investigators determined Pitts had been in custody since March 21st, when he was arrested for a Violation of a Restraining Order. Pitts was housed alone in his cell.
The Riverside County Coroner will conduct the autopsy to determine the cause of death.
