Narrative: |

In January of 2018, deputies from the Thousand Oaks Police Department responded to the 100 block of West Avenida De Los Arboles for a stolen vehicle report. The female victim is a resident and small business owner in the City of Thousand Oaks. The female victim reported a person named Dan Nguyen not only stole her vehicle, but also stole several thousand dollars from her by means of a fraudulent business scheme. Detectives from the Thousand Oaks Police Department took over the investigation and identified the suspect as Dan Nguyen of Irvine. Detectives learned, through their investigation, that the victim met Nguyen on a popular Internet dating site. Nguyen told the victim he was an expert businessman and a business consultant. Nguyen, under the guise of helping the victim grow her business, convinced the victim to sign over half of her business to him, rent an apartment for him in the City of Costa Mesa, and lease two vehicles for him in her name. In addition, Nguyen convinced the victim to make all payments to him instead of the respective financial institutions. Nguyen took the money from the victim that was intended to pay for the vehicles and apartment but never forwarded the money to the financial institutions. Detectives determined Nguyen stole approximately $200,000.00 from the victim. On March 22, 2018, investigators served a search warrant at Nguyen’s residence located in the 1500 block of Synergy in the City of Irvine. As a result of the search, Detectives located and seized numerous financial documents and $3,800.00 in United States currency. Nguyen was arrested for violating Penal Code section 532(a) / theft by false pretenses. Nguyen was transported back to Ventura County and booked into jail. He remains in custody on $100,000 bail. |
