NOTE: Newark Public Schools Are CLOSED Today; Parking Available at Select Schools Tonight’s Concert at Prudential Center Cancelled

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports that due to the latest forecasts predicting heavy wind, rain and snow today, with potential snow accumulations likely to exceed 1-foot. All residents are asked to avoid unnecessary travel and to observe the city’s “NO PARKING WHEN ROADS ARE SNOW COVERED” ordinance, which will be enforced.

Violators can expect to be issued a summons and towed. These regulations are essential to the removal/plowing of snow and salting operations. Whenever possible, off-street parking is recommended during snow storms. Signs are posted on streets throughout the City of Newark to notify motorists of the streets designated for no parking during snow storms. Motorists and residents are urged to look for the signs, pictured below, to identify the streets where the parking ban will be enforced. Resident should avoid unnecessary travel.

Tonight’s concert at Prudential Center, featuring Demi Lovato and DJ Khaled has been cancelled due to inclement weather conditions as has tonight’s City Council Meeting. City Hall and the Courts are also closed today.

Based on the latest forecasts, snowfall is expected to be heaviest between 2 p.m. today and 2 a.m. tomorrow, with the storm ending on Thursday at approximately 3 a.m. The City of Newark has deployed over 75 pieces of snow removal equipment.

Residents are also asked to park their cars on odd numbered sides of their blocks during this snow emergency. For instance, residents are asked to park on the sides of the streets with house numbers like 21, 133, and 565. All residents are reminded that tossing snow into the street is against the law, and violators will be fined.

Downed trees and power lines are expected due to high winds and heavy snowfall. DO NOT TOUCH DOWNED WIRES and DO NOT PARK OVER MANHOLE COVERS AS THEY MAY POSE A HAZARD. Call 9-1-1 for emergency assistance.

The City of Newark offers winter shelters at 224-238 Sussex Avenue and at the John F. Kennedy Recreation Center at 211 West Kinney Street have been opened. Street cleaning and garbage pickup is suspended today.

Home and property owners are responsible for clearing snow and ice from all private residential and commercial property, including areas in and around driveways, sidewalks, and walkways. The City of Newark does not provide snow removal services to private property – residential or commercial property.

Residents are encouraged to observe ‘good neighbor’ tenets while weathering the snowstorm, by abiding by the following laws:

• Park vehicles in your driveway, so that the plows can get through to remove snow and ice.
• If possible, share your driveway with neighbors or secure vehicles on off-street lots.
• Clear snow and ice from the sidewalk in front of your storefront or home.
• Do not throw snow into the street. Place the snow on your lawn, on the side of your home or in the rear of the property.
• Remove snow and ice from hydrants and/or drains near your home.
• If you must venture out, take public transportation or carpool where possible.

The Department of Public Safety is coordinating responses to weather-related emergencies and other incidents through the combined use of Police, Fire, Office of Emergency Management Personnel, and other city services at the Emergency Operations Center, located at 480 Clinton Avenue.
