Winter Storm Advisory
West New York Residents are urged to Prepare and Maintain Caution, Avoid Unnecessary Travel if Possible.

WEST NEW YORK, NJ - The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning beginning tonight, Tuesday, March 20, 2018 through Thursday, March 22, 2018. Mayor Felix E. Roque, M.D. and the Board of Commissioners urge residents to prepare appropriately.

Snow will move into the area overnight tonight after a short period of rain and wintry mix throughout the evening tonight. Throughout the night, the wintry mix will transition to snow. Heavy snow to start early Wednesday morning continuing through Wednesday evening. Total snow accumulation is expected to be 8-12 inches with locally higher amounts of 10 - 15 inches possible. Snowfall rates of 1 – 2 inches per hour are possible. White out conditions are possible for Wednesday afternoon and evening and some thunderstorms are also expected throughout the day Wednesday.

Winds will be 15 – 20 miles per hour with gusts up to 30 miles per hour. This may cause blowing and drifting snow.

The West New York Police Department and Office of Emergency Management will continue to monitor later forecasts and will be prepared to act should conditions progress in danger.

Residents are urged to secure all property (including construction sites), ensuring unsecured objects from balconies and rooftops are brought indoors. Outdoor objects such as lawn furniture or garbage cans that could blow away and cause damage or injury should also be secured.

Remember, the safest place to be during high winds is indoors, if possible, try to postpone all outdoor activities. If you must go outside, stay alert for flying debris. Tree limbs may break, and street signs may become loose during strong wind gusts. Keep an eye toward nearby balconies for loose objects that may fall. Please stay indoors and off the roads if possible. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. As you prepare for this

Property owners/occupants are reminded that they have six hours after the completion of a storm to remove snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property, along with adjoining wheelchair ramps or curb cuts. Residents are urged to assist elderly or disabled neighbors with clearing snow from their properties. It is illegal to shovel snow back onto streets or onto fire hydrants. The Town is responsible for clearing sidewalks around Town-owned properties.

The town performs proactive inspections and also relies on citizen complaints to help identify those property owners that are not meeting sidewalk safety requirements. The vast majority of property owners comply with these regulations, but the Town will issue fines to those who do not keep sidewalks clear.

Tips from PSE&G
  • Downed wires should always be considered “live.” Do not approach or drive over a downed line and do not touch anything it might be in contact with. If a wire falls on or near your car, stay inside the car, call 911, and do not get out until PSE&G de-energizes the line. If you MUST get out of the vehicle because it is on fire, jump as far as possible away from the vehicle, with both feet landing on the ground at the same time, and hop or shuffle away.
  • To prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, do not run any gasoline powered engine, including generators and snow-blowers, in a garage or any other enclosed space.
  • Avoid anything that may be touching downed lines, including vehicles or tree branches. Puddles can conduct electricity in some cases. Warn others to stay away.
