Police Arrest Suspects Following Officer-Involved Shooting

Following a “shelter in place” alert issued to residents near Bayfair Center on Thursday night, the San Leandro Police Department has lifted that order, after an outstanding, armed suspect was located and arrested by police.

On Thursday night, Fremont Police detectives were in San Leandro, investigating a series of East Bay auto burglaries that started in Fremont.  Detectives tracked the 2 suspects to San Leandro’s Bayfair Center and watched the men as they drove though the parking lot near Starbucks Coffee and 24-Hour Fitness.  They called the San Leandro police for assistance at 9:00pm, when they believed the men were getting ready to commit another auto burglary.

As San Leandro officers were responding to assist the Fremont detectives, the suspects used their car and intentionally rammed some of the cars driven by Fremont police detectives.  The suspects fled the parking lot and were pursued into the nearby neighborhood on Ruth Ct. near Hesperian Blvd.

As the suspects stopped, Fremont detectives tried to arrest them, but instead, were confronted by one suspect raising a handgun.  Fremont police shot at the armed suspect and quickly arrested him, while the other suspect, also believed to be armed, ran into the backyard of a house at the end of the Ruth Ct. cul-de-sac.

San Leandro officers arrived and assumed command of the incident.  Paramedics transported the first suspect to a local hospital, where he was treated for wounds sustained during the shooting.  Police issued a “shelter in place” order and called on the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office and California Highway Patrol to assist in the search for the other suspect who fled into the Ruth Ct. neighborhood.

“We knew we were searching for a violent felon, who we believed was armed,” stated Lt. Robert McManus.  “We called upon other law enforcement agencies to assist, as it was critical that we found and safely apprehended the outstanding suspect as soon as possible,” he said.

The San Leandro Police Department’s Tactical Operations team led an intense search for the outstanding suspect that lasted a few hours.  A police dog, trained in human scent tracking, picked up a scent from clothing discarded in a Ruth Ct. yard, and tracked it 100-150 yards, before finding the suspect hiding in the bushes near the railroad tracks behind the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant on Hesperian Blvd.

The suspect was found with a non-life threatening gunshot wound, which police believe was a result of the police gunfire.  He was treated by paramedics and transported to an area hospital for further medical treatment.

Police are not releasing the identities of the men suspected of assaulting the officers in this incident, as their investigation is continuing.  However, they are described as being in their late 20s to early 30s.  One of the suspects is on parole related to a previous conviction for pimping and is also on probation for a conviction for possession of illegal firearms.  The second suspect is on probation related to a previous burglary conviction.

Both suspects remain hospitalized this morning and will be transferred to Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, CA, after they are discharged from the hospital.  Investigators, who are continuing their investigation, will be meeting with the District Attorney, will seek criminal charges against the suspects including assault against police officers, various firearms-related offenses, revocations of probation and parole, and others.

As standard protocol in incidents such as this, the SLPD has primary jurisdiction for the criminal investigation.  An independent investigation will be conducted by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, while an internal investigation will be conducted by the Fremont Police Department.
