A McDowell man got bilked for money through an online loan scam, and authorities are warning others to steer clear of the cons.
The victim reported that he was contacted by Advance America to file an online personal loan. After he submitted the necessary documents, the man said the scammers told him his credit was too low and advised him to get a money gram from Walmart and send it to them to cover the insurance on his loan.
Advance America is a legitimate loan company but says they aren’t making the calls. Someone is imitating them.
Authorities urge citizens not to send money or give out personal information. Check with Advance America to ensure they made the call. For questions or concerns, contact the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office at 652-2235.
