#LASD Update Dep Involved in Fatal T/C, Patrol Veh Struck Head-on, by Wrong Way Driver, Lancaster

On March 11, 2018, at approximately 1:41 AM, a two manned CHP unit were on routine patrol when they observed two vehicles stopped at the top of the northbound SR-14 West Avenue F off-ramp.  The two man CHP unit pulled in behind the two vehicles to investigate if any aide was needed.  As the two CHP officers approached the vehicles, the driver of the 1998 Volvo drove off leaving the scene, turning onto eastbound on Avenue F.  When the two officers re-entered the patrol vehicle, the other driver told them that he had been rear ended by the Volvo.

The CHP officers drove after the Volvo and made an attempt to pull it over by activating the patrol vehicle's emergency lights. The Volvo almost immediately, for unknown reasons, veered to the left and crashed head-on with an LASD marked patrol vehicle that was traveling westbound on Avenue F.  The LASD Deputy was responding to a routine call for service, which was unrelated to the original traffic collision on the ramp.  The Deputy was operating the marked patrol vehicle with no lights or siren activate, completely unaware of the CHP incident.

As a result of the collision, the driver of the Volvo (Adult Male) sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.  The Passenger of the Volvo (Male Adult) sustained moderate injuries and was transported by ambulance to a local Hospital.  The LASD Deputy sustained injuries to her left side and was transported to a local hospital.  Alcohol and or drugs is suspected to be a factor in this traffic collision, pending Los Angeles County Coroner's toxicology report.  As of 6 P.M. the LASD Deputy is listed in stable condition.
