Advisory

Please Clear Snow Around Fire Hydrants

The Fair Lawn Fire Department along with the Fair Lawn Fire Prevention Bureau urges residents and business owners to clear away snow from fire hydrants so that the hydrants are easily accessible in case of an emergency. It is critical to maintain sustainable water supplies to battle fires and especially important that our Fire Department personnel can quickly locate fire hydrants.

By taking a few extra minutes to clear a three-foot space around the fire hydrant, this will allow responding units the quick access needed in case of emergencies. When sweeping or shoveling snow from driveways or walks, fire hydrants should be cleared all around, enabling fire hoses enough room to expand. With freezing overnight temperatures, snow can turn into ice, which could freeze the hydrant making it useless when firefighters need it most. By taking these few minutes to dig out the fire hydrants in your area, you are helping us perform lifesaving work without delays to ensure your safety and the safety of others in our community.

Residents are also reminded not to block fire hydrants with vehicles and to clear snow from exhaust vents for high efficiency furnaces and hot water heaters.

Thank you for assistance and cooperation. Stay safe!
