Car wash break-in suspect identified after chase

Detective Nathan Mace of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged Teddy Justin Rathbone, 27, of 108 Flat Creek Road in Black Mountain, with breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, breaking and entering a motor vehicle, possession of burglary tools, misdemeanor larceny and injury to real property.
On Sunday, Feb. 11, Rathbone was involved in a domestic dispute at Walmart in Marion. When deputies arrived, he led them on a chase from Marion to Black Mountain, where he was apprehended in his own yard.
The truck driven by Rathbone was hauled to the McDowell Sheriff’s Office. Mace determined it resembled one used by the suspect in a break-in to Zip Wash Car Wash, on U.S. 70 West in P.G., on Friday Feb. 9, where $4,000 worth of items, including two shop vacs, a toolbox and tools, a pressure washer, a propane heater, two drills and a diamond necklace, were taken.
A search of Rathbone’s truck turned up burglary tools and some of the property stolen from Zip Wash.
