State of Emergency Declared by Governor of New Jersey – Winter Storm

West New York Residents are urged to maintain caution and avoid unnecessary travel if possible.

WEST NEW YORK, NJ - ADVISORY: The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning from 10:00PM tonight, Tuesday, March 6, 2018 until 4:00AM Thursday, March 8, 2018. The Governor has declared a State of Emergency for New Jersey beginning at 8:00PM tonight due to the impending nor’easter.  This storm is categorized as a ‘major’ nor’easter that will bring strong winds, coastal flooding, heavy rain and snow, and inland flooding.

Snow will move into the area overnight tonight and continue through Wednesday night. It will start off slow and possibly mix with rain. Heaviest snow starts late Wednesday morning and continues through Wednesday evening. Total snow accumulation is expected to be 6-10 inches with locally higher amounts of 10 - 14 inches possible. Snowfall rates of 1 – 2 inches per hour are possible. White out conditions are possible for Wednesday afternoon and evening.

Winds will be 15 – 20 miles per hour with gusts up to 30 miles per hour. This may cause blowing and drifting snow.
The West New York Police Department and Office of Emergency Management will continue to monitor later forecasts and will be prepared to act should conditions progress in danger. Residents are urged to secure all property (including construction sites), ensuring unsecured objects from balconies and rooftops are brought indoors. Outdoor objects such as lawn furniture or garbage cans that could blow away and cause damage or injury should also be secured.

Remember, the safest place to be during high winds is indoors, if possible, try to postpone all outdoor activities. If you must go outside, stay alert for flying debris. Tree limbs may break, and street signs may become loose during strong wind gusts. Keep an eye toward nearby balconies for loose objects that may fall. Please stay indoors and off the roads if possible. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. As you prepare for this

Street sweeping is suspended for Wednesday, March 7th and for Thursday, March 8th. Property owners/occupants are reminded that they have six hours after the completion of a storm to remove snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property, along with adjoining wheelchair ramps or curb cuts. Residents are urged to assist elderly or disabled neighbors with clearing snow from their properties. It is illegal to shovel snow back onto streets or onto fire hydrants. The Town is responsible for clearing sidewalks around Town-owned properties.

The City performs proactive inspections and also relies on citizen complaints to help identify those property owners that are not meeting sidewalk safety requirements. The vast majority of property owners comply with these regulations, but the City will issue fines to those who do not keep sidewalks clear.

Parents are reminded that the West New York Board of Education has closed all schools on Wednesday, March 7, 2018. The Town of West New York will close all municipal offices on Wednesday, March 7, 2018.

Mayor Felix E. Roque, M.D. and the Board of Commissioners have designated multiple locations as warming centers, including the Senior Nutrition Center at Sunshine Garden (515-54th Street, West New York, NJ), as well as West New York Housing Authority buildings located at 430 62nd Street, 6100 Adams Street, 6300 Adams Street, and 5800 Jefferson Street. All warming centers will be open from 8:00AM to 7:00PM.
