Gyrocopter Pilot, 69-year-old Sam Dollenmeier, died at Beaufort Memorial late morning. Crash being investigated.

According to Beaufort County Coroner Edward Allen, 69-year-old Sam Dollenmeier of St. Helena Island—identified as the gyrocopter pilot in this morning's Lady's Island Airport crash—died just before noon today at the Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Coroner Allen has scheduled a forensic autopsy to be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina tomorrow to determine the cause and manner of Dollenmeier's death.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), who along with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will be conducting a full investigation into the cause of the gyrocopter crash, is now on-scene at the Lady's Island Airport. The airport remains temporarily closed to air traffic.
