NOVATO POLICE DEPARTMENT TO MAKE FIREARM SAFET KITS AVAILABLE IN NOVATO THROUGH PARTNERSHIP WITH PROJECT CHILDSAFE
Novato Police Department in conjunction with Project ChildSafe, the nationwide firearms safety education program, will distribute free firearms safety kits to local residents. The safety kits include a cable-style gun lock and will be distributed upon request during business hours at our police department, 909 Machin Avenue in Novato.
Project ChildSafe, a program developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), educates community members of safe firearms handling practices and works to reduce firearms accidents in local communities. Project ChildSafe has distributed more than 37 million firearm safety kits throughout the country since 2003. The program is supported by the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance and the firearms industry.
“This is an important reminder that safe firearms practices and storage should be practiced all year long, so we can reduce the number of accidents and create a safer environment for our community,” said Chief Adam McGill. “We encourage residents to pick up a Project ChildSafe safety kit, which includes a safety curriculum and a cable-style gun lock. The locks fit on most handguns, rifles and shotguns.”
Partnering with Project ChildSafe allows Novato Police Department to participate in a national effort to promote firearms safety education to all gun owners. The program distributes gun lock safety kits to all 50 states and five U.S. territories.
“We are pleased to have Novato Police Department as a Project ChildSafe partner,” said Bill Brassard Jr., director of Project ChildSafe. “Project ChildSafe is an important step forward in helping ensure that all firearm owners fully understand their responsibilities with respect to the safe handling and storage of firearms.”
