Incident: Officer Helps Deliver Baby in Vehicle Stopped on Shoulder of LIE
Location: Westbound Long Island Expressway, near exit 51, Dix Hills, New York
Date/Time: Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at approximately 5:35 p.m.
Suffolk County Police Highway Enforcement Section Sergeant Scheuerer responded to a 911 call at approximately 5:35 p.m. during which the caller, Edward Livote, stated his wife was in active labor and that they were en route to Winthrop Hospital in Mineola, New York.
Livote, 33, of Hauppauge, NY was driving his 2014 Honda Odyssey minivan westbound on the Long Island Expressway when he pulled over on the shoulder left of the HOV lane near exit 51. Fire Rescue and Emergency Services dispatcher Jon Hallock coached him on assisting his wife, Janine Presley-Livote, 30, on successfully delivering the baby.
Sergeant Scheuerer arrived at the scene, placed the newborn face down onto her mother’s stomach, cleared the baby’s airway by removing mucus by doing a finger sweep. Sergeant Scheuerer tied the umbilical cord with the string from a first aid mask that was in another Highway Patrol officer’s medical bag.
Dix Hills Fire Department transported the baby girl, Charlotte and her mother to Huntington Hospital where they are both in stable condition.
